Did you know that Orgova Home Inspections includes Well functionality as part of our standard inspections? We also perform Well water quality testing. If you are looking at a home with a private Well, read the highlights below from the CDC regarding location, contaminants, and more!
Safety depends highly on Well location. Possible sources of contamination and minimum distances include:
Septic Tanks – 50 feet from Well
Livestock yards, Silos, and Septic Leach Fields – 50 feet from Well
Petroleum Tanks, Liquid-Tight Manure Storage, and Fertilizer Storage and Handling – 100 feet from Well
Manure Stacks – 250 feet from Well
Potential Contaminants can cause groundwater to become unusable if it becomes polluted and is no longer safe to drink. Contaminated groundwater can be the result of:
Microbial contamination (fecal contamination from feedlots).
High concentrations of naturally occurring contaminants, such as arsenic and radon (depending on the geology of the land surrounding the Well).
Local land use practices (fertilizers and pesticides).
Problems with the integrity of nearby on-site septic systems.
Read the full CDC recommendations and article at this link CDC Reference. Also be sure to check local regulations, as they may vary from CDC guidelines.
